How To Give A Great Wedding Speech

Wedding speeches can be one of the most memorable parts of the wedding day. Whether it’s pure emotion you’re after, or a laugh or two, your speech is sure to be remembered by your guests for a long time.

But giving the speech can also feel quite daunting, and that’s why we’ve put together some tips to help…

Cue cards

Having a few cue cards in hand can be a really helpful guide when you’re giving your speech. A brief summary of your main points on paper can be a reminder of what you wanted to say and prompt you with your key points. Cue cards can also help with nerves if the prospect of giving a speech feels a little overwhelming and you’re worried your mind might go blank.

Humour

The wedding speeches are a great chance to inject some fun into the big day.

Is there a memory that stands out to you? A story that showcases the bride and groom’s personality? The good thing about a humorous speech is that it’s sure to live long in the memory of the guests and offer light relief after an emotional ceremony.

Poem

Incorporating a poem into the speech could be an amazing way to conjure emotion amongst your loved ones. Whether it’s a heartfelt tear-jerker, or something a little more light-hearted, poems are wonderful accompaniments to a wedding speech, and it’s guaranteed to be a real highlight for the bride and groom.

Get creative

If you want to make your speech unique, you could try putting a special spin on it by incorporating something personal to the bride and groom. Depending on how brave you’re feeling, you could change the lyrics of a favourite song to fit the couple, and bring in others to help you create a mini-performance. Or share some items and tell a story that relates to the couple? So many different options to have a bit of fun!

The thank you’s

No matter the order of the speeches, it’s important to thank the various people involved in your special day. Whether it’s the groom thanking the best man, or the bride thanking the page boys and flower girls, a thank you goes a long way, and will be greatly appreciated by your loved ones. If there are any absent friends or family, this could also be a good time to remember them and raise a glass.

Last but not least…

Practice!

This one can’t be understated. That little bit of rehearsal can have a massive impact on controlling any nerves you might feel on the day. Not only can practice help reduce worries, but it gives you a much clearer picture of timings. The more preparation you can do, the better.

No matter what kind of speech you go for, if it comes from the heart, it’s sure to strike a chord with everyone there. Whether it’s tears of happiness or laughter, make it as memorable as you can. Once you start, and the words start to flow, we’re sure you’ll enjoy it.
