Poems are notorious for making emotions come alive, and they will be running high on your wedding day! Whether it’s read after the ring exchange, or as part of the vows, those words are sure to be remembered as a special part of your day.
Types of Wedding Poems
There are so many wonderful poems out there to choose from. It’s definitely worth taking some time to read a few and see which resonates with you as a couple.
The Romantic Kind
There is a vast selection of gorgeous poems out there that can help portray that traditional sense of romance. Here is one example by poet Rumi, titled ‘In One Another’s Souls’:
The moment I heard my first love story
I started looking for you,
not knowing how useless that was.
Lovers don’t meet somewhere along the way.
They’re in one another’s souls all along.
Perfect words for creating that extra tender moment between the two of you. There’s sure to be a tear or two shed!
The Funny Kind
Or perhaps you want something a little different. You could bring some laughter to proceedings with a funny poem instead. They will add a light-hearted feel to the day, and bring out your personalities even more.
‘I Rely On You’ by Hovis Presley is a humorous, yet still affectionate, take on love. It includes the following lines:
I rely on you
like a camera needs a shutter
like a gambler needs a flutter
like a golfer needs a putter
like a buttered scone involves some butter
For more funny poems, Ogden Nash is a great poet to turn to. Works such as ‘A Word to Husbands’ are sure to fetch a few giggles. Expect tears of a slightly different kind to be shed here!
Write your own!
If you’re up for a bit of a challenge, and getting really creative, you could even try writing your own poem. It’s important to remember that it’s not about the standard of the writing, but its essence, what the words mean to you. You can draw on memories, favourite moments, and make it completely authentic and true to you. It could certainly make for an emotional moment.
Even in humour, poems can still be heartfelt and meaningful. With their powerful words, they add an extra layer of emotion to proceedings. No matter the style of the poem, you’re sure to treasure and remember it for the sentiment it brought to your day.
