3 Fabulous Wedding First Dance Ideas

Love it or hate it, the first dance is something friends and family are bound to start asking about as soon as you’ve announced your wedding! Whilst you absolutely don’t have to confirm to tradition, it can be a wonderful way to kick off the evening wedding celebration.

To first dance, or to not first dance?

Your first dance can be absolutely anything you want. It’s a chance to reflect on your relationship, to have some fun, to look back on a treasured memory, or even remember a loved one. There are so many possibilities! Silly and entertaining, or slow and romantic, it’s completely your choice. But the biggest decision is will you say yes to the dance? We’ve shared some ideas below to help you decide if a first dance is for you or not.

  1. Make it personal to you

You could draw on something nostalgic, such as the first song you listened to in the early days of your relationship. Perhaps it holds a special place in your hearts, and you want to channel the memories of those initial days together. Or you could channel a favourite memory such as a holiday and include a song that reminds you of that experience. You can make it very personal to you as a couple and share a part of your story with your wedding guests.

  1. Classics

The romantic classics are classic for a reason. From ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ by Frank Sinatra, to Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love,’ they are masterpieces for creating that magical, romantic moment. Don’t be afraid to go for one of these gems. They’re almost certain to draw a happy tear or two from your guests as well! Can you imagine dancing to a classic?

  1. Let loose!

The idea of the first dance can bring out a few nerves. However, you can combat this by just having fun! Your dance doesn’t have to be serious if you don’t want it to be. Choose something upbeat and fun instead, a cheesy classic, perhaps, that will get everyone out of their seats and fill the dance floor with you. This way, you will send those nerves packing. It will be fabulously memorable and you won’t be the centre of attention on the dance floor.

  1. Mix it up

Who says you have to stick to one song? Why not mix multiple songs into one, meaning you could dance to a number of your favourite songs, without compromise. You could even ask your band or DJ for help. Or perhaps you and your partner both want a different song. If that’s the case, this could be the perfect option, a way to make you both happy.

Through the stressful moments of planning your wedding, the first dance can offer a sense of enjoyment, and relief. Whether it’s the classic romantic atmosphere you’re aiming for, or a dance-fest, it will be the right choice for you. It’s certain to be a special moment no matter what song you choose.
