Picturesque Villages You Must See When Visiting The Peak District

There is so much to see and do on your Peak District Holiday and lots of reasons why you should holiday in the Peaks, but how do you know where to start with planning your trip?

A lot of activities do depend on a dry day, yet if you wake up and it’s pouring, there are still lots of activities you can take part in and one of our favourites is village-hopping in the Peak District!

What is village-hopping?

Village-hopping is about making the most of the local area, jumping in the car (or on the bus), and exploring as many villages as you can. And whilst you’re in the Peaks, this couldn’t be easier to do. Not only do you get to take in some incredible and picturesque views, but you’ll also get to see to ‘real Peak District’. Sampling local food, shopping in village stores, and sipping pints in the community pub. What’s more, if you’re staying at Hargate Hall, you are best placed for your Peak District village adventures as we are so central, you’ll have easy access to the whole of the Peaks.

What villages are a ‘must-see’ in the peak district?

Chatsworth – Most famously known for Chatsworth House, the ‘village of Chatsworth’ actually houses multiple villages. You’ll find Edensor, Beeley, Pilsley and Calton Lees all waiting for you to explore. These villages might be small, but they will keep you busy all day with walks, pubs, art galleries and the newly refurbished Chatsworth Farm Shop – perfect for an afternoon tea or morning coffee.

Bakewell – With lots of shops to explore, river walks and an array of pubs, you could easily spend a morning or afternoon in Bakewell. It’s easy to join the Monsal trail too. But you can’t leave without trying the traditional Bakewell Pudding.

Castleton – Nestled on the edge of the Hope Valley, Castleton is your gateway to the White Peak. There is so much to do and see in this beautiful village, it also makes a great stop off after you’ve climbed Mam Tor!

Ashford-on-the-Water – This tiny village has stunning cottages and wonderful river views. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time as you wander the village. With a lovely local store and the obligatory country pub, it’s a great stopping off point on your way home from a busy day in the Peaks.

How to plan a village-hopping day?

It’s best to map out a logical route before you leave. Creating a journey using google maps and pins or marking out a driving route with an old-fashioned AA map. Planning your journey well means you don’t waste any time and don’t miss out on closing times of pubs or shops, that might not be open all hours as they are in major towns. With covid restrictions, you might even need to book ahead for your tasty pub lunch. But keep an open mind and if you drive past a small village that you like the sound of, don’t be afraid to make a detour!

The good news is we’ve still got availability for your summer holiday! Come and join us at Hargate Hall for a fabulous summer of village hopping. With luxurious self-catering apartments and walks from our front door, you will have a holiday you’ll never forget.
