About Hargate Hall: Our Story, Heritage & Vision
We Sell Freedom, Not Just a Venue
At Hargate Hall, we believe your wedding weekend or family holiday shouldn’t be defined by a corporate handbook or a rigid schedule.
We operate on a simple, refreshing philosophy: total DIY flexibility. We provide a magnificent historic country house estate and luxury self-catering accommodation; the rest is a blank canvas for your individual budget, taste, and imagination. No hidden surcharges, no strict vendor ties, and absolutely no corkage fees.
Meet the Knox Family
Hargate Hall is proudly owned, managed, and cared for by Anthony and Julie Knox, along with our children.
When we first took over the estate, we didn’t want to create a faceless, commercial hotel chain. Instead, we set out to build a welcoming, family-run destination where guests truly feel like they have been handed the keys to their own private stately home for the weekend.
Whether we are greeting you personally on your arrival or helping you map out your supplier logistics, our family is dedicated to making sure your Peak District stay is completely stress-free.
Steeped in Peak District History Since 1899
Your stay here links you directly to over a century of Derbyshire heritage.
- The Vision (1899): The hall was originally commissioned in 1899 by Joseph Wainwright, a prominent local quarry owner.
- The Master Builder: During construction, ownership passed to Robert Whitehead—the Ex-Sheriff of Derbyshire and a successful industrialist. It was Whitehead who added the building’s most grand features, including the extra story, the castellated tower over the front door, the stable block, and our sweeping parkland grounds.
- A Place of Sanctuary: Over the years, the hall has served many purposes—including acting as a vital recuperation center for wounded British servicemen during the Second World War.
Today, the estate has been lovingly renovated into 12 individual luxury self-catering apartments. While fitted with all modern holiday comforts, the property retains its magnificent original grand features, including our iconic central handcrafted wooden staircase.
Why Our Guest Experience Is Different
- True Group Takeovers: Our 12 apartments allow up to 77 of your closest family and friends to live, cook, and celebrate together under one roof.
- Absolute Independence: You have complete freedom over your own catering, drinks, entertainment, and schedules.
- Seven Acres of Peace: Located in the idyllic village of Wormhill near Buxton, you are surrounded by the best walking routes and country backdrops the Peak District has to offer.
